Last week I participated in a validation exercise of a mobile application called Milab. I was one of the four science teachers invited by the Ministry of Education.
Milab application is being developed by Mzuzu University ICT incubation center with financial support from UNDP. Itย contains a number of simulations for chemistry and physics experiments. It allows students and teachers do experiments on a mobile phone or tablet. With it students can perform experiments like titration, verification of ohm’s law, conductivity tests etc.
During the meeting students from Marymount, Chibavi, Luwinga and Rumphi Secondary Schools were allowed to have a feel of the app. Students were excited to use it and they were finding similar results when they conduct the same experiments in a traditional laboratory.
The app is still being developed and it might be ready before the year ends. However, students could not wait to have it in their schools. They felt that the app will go along way in solving problems they face as they learn physics and chemistry.
I am grateful to the Ministry of Education for allowing me to be part of the development of this application as a chemistry expart. I am so happy to see that my ideas are taken on board as we develop one of the best teaching and learning tool on the land.
Milab application proves that mobile technology can solve most problems teachers face as they conduct teaching and learning processes.
